Walk me through Verso.
Six steps through the app, from the document you drop in to the copy you hand over.
Get to know Verso.
Everything a document needs, and nothing that needs an account to work.
Opens the moment you ask
Documents appear straight away and pages render as you scroll, so a four-hundred-page report behaves like a four-page one. Your recent documents wait on the home screen, each showing its first page.
Every document in one window
Open as many as you like; each gets a tab. Switching is instant, and each keeps its own place, its own zoom and its own undo history.
Markup that travels with the file
Highlight, underline, strike through, draw, add shapes, drop a note or a text box. Your marks live in the document, so whoever you send it to sees exactly what you saw.
The actual words on the page
Click into existing text and change it. Not a box laid over the top — the real line, restyled to sit with its neighbours.
Pages you can rearrange
The whole document as a grid. Drag a page, or a whole selection, and drop it where it belongs. Rotate, duplicate, extract or delete from the same place — and it is free.
Redaction that removes
A black box drawn in most tools leaves the words underneath, ready to be copied straight back out. Verso takes the content out of the file.
Built for long reading
A reading ruler that dims everything but the line you are on, a distraction-free Reading View, and Read Aloud that highlights each word as it speaks it.
No network, at all
Verso contains no code that talks to the internet. Turn off your Wi-Fi and every single feature still works — including the ones other apps send to a server.
Made for the long document.
The part everyone uses every day, so it is the part that is free. Verso opens a document at the page you left it on and gets out of the way.
The reading ruler
Everything dims except a clear band that follows your pointer, so your eye cannot slide into the wrong line. Arrow keys nudge it, and you can still click the page underneath.
Read Aloud
Verso reads the document to you and highlights each word as it goes. The fastest way to catch the word you typed twice — and the easiest way through a long report.
Find your way
Page thumbnails, the document's own outline, bookmarks for the places you keep returning to, and a list of every annotation you have made.
Reading View strips a document down to its words when you need to read rather than work. Everything on this row is free.
Say what you think, on the page.
Three classic marks, three brushes, shapes, notes, text boxes and images. Every one of them lands in the file, so the person you send it to sees exactly what you saw.
Highlight, underline, strike through
In whatever colours you choose. The colour picker keeps the swatches you use, so the exact green you highlight with is one click away next time instead of something you mix again from scratch.
Draw and point
Pen, marker and pencil, each in fine, regular or bold, plus lines, arrows, rectangles and ovals. An arrow pointing at the thing you are talking about saves a paragraph of explanation.
Notes and text boxes
Drop a comment anywhere on a page, or add a block of text for a label, a caption, or an answer in a space that was never designed to be filled in.
Review your own pass
The annotations list shows everything you have put on the document in one place, so you can check it before you send it.
Put the pages where they belong.
Rearranging a document should not be a paid feature, so in Verso it is not. All of this is free.
Drag one, or a hundred
The whole document as a grid of pages. Lift one — or a whole selection — and drop it where it belongs. The fastest way to fix a scan that came in the wrong order.
Merge
Combine several PDFs into one, in the order you choose. For assembling an application, a submission, or a single file out of the six attachments someone sent you.
Split
Break one PDF into several — every few pages, at ranges you name, at the document's own bookmarks, or into single pages.
Rotate, duplicate, extract, delete, crop and insert pages from another document are all here too, and all free. Snapshots give you a way back: Verso takes one automatically before the most destructive operations, even when you did not think to.
How to reorder PDF pages on MacChange the words, not a box over them.
Fix the typo in the letterhead. Correct the figure. Update the date. Verso edits the actual text on the page.
A line, or a whole paragraph
Click into existing text and type. Verso looks at the size of the lines around the one you are changing and proposes a size that sits between them, so the edited line does not come out visibly different from its neighbours. Override it whenever you want something else.
Restyle a whole document
Change the document font throughout in one move, for when a file arrives set in something unreadable.
Turn a scan into a document
A scanned page is a picture of words, so there is nothing to click into. Make Searchable runs text recognition over it and its words become selectable, searchable and editable.
Take the text out
Pull the text from a region of a page straight onto your clipboard, without exporting the whole document.
A stack of scans, made searchable.
This is the step that turns a filing cabinet into something you can actually work with. Most tools send your scan to a server to do it. Verso does it on your Mac.
Recognise the words
Run Make Searchable and the page stops being a picture. You can select the text, search it, copy it and edit it like any other document.
Only when it is needed
Verso tells you if a document already carries real text, so you never run recognition over something that does not need it.
A folder at a time
Set up a batch recipe once — recognise text, add a watermark, compress — and run it across a whole folder. Forty scanned invoices and one afternoon stop being the same problem.
Take it out, don’t cover it up.
This matters more than it sounds. A black rectangle drawn over a name in most tools leaves the name in the file, ready to be copied straight back out.
Redact
Verso takes the content out of the document. You choose how the redacted page is produced, depending on whether you need to keep working on the file afterwards or want it locked down.
Sanitize
Clears the document's own details — author, title, keywords — along with comments and marks, before you share it.
Password
Save an encrypted copy that needs a password to open. The original stays exactly as it was.
Flatten fixes your annotations permanently into the page so nobody downstream can move or remove them. Verso tells you what that costs before you do it — flattened pages become pictures, and their text stops being selectable.
How to redact a PDF on MacFill it in. Sign it. Send it.
The intake sheet, the permission slip, the contract that came back for signature. All of it stays on your machine.
Fill a form and save it back
Complete a PDF form and save it, filled. No printing, no scanning, no uploading it to a service that keeps a copy.
Build a form other people can fill
Add fields to a document for the order form you keep printing and filling in by hand.
Sign where it belongs
Place your signature exactly where it goes, at the size it should be.
Stamps, watermarks and numbers
A library of stamps — Approved, Draft, Confidential and the rest — plus watermarks across a document and page numbering.
Out of a PDF, into whatever comes next.
Word, Excel and PowerPoint when you need the content back in an editable document. Plain text and Rich Text for quoting and archiving. Every page as a picture. A compressed copy small enough to email.
Compare two versions
Open the version you sent and the one that came back side by side, and see what changed — page by page, in the text and visually. For the contract returned with “a few small edits”.
Run a recipe over a folder
Set a job up once and run it across a whole folder of documents, writing the results wherever you choose.
Check it before you publish it
The accessibility check reviews a document against the things that make it usable with a screen reader and tells you what is missing.
Ask the document a question
Summarise it, or ask what it says about something, and get an answer grounded in the document itself. It runs on your Mac using Apple's on-device intelligence.
You can see which is which.
Every Premium feature carries a small lock, in the document actions panel and in the menu bar alike. Nothing is hidden and nothing pretends to be free until the moment you try it — the lock is a label, not a barrier. There is no trial nag and no countdown.

Your documents don’t go anywhere.
This is the whole argument, and it is not a setting you have to find. Others route your file through a server to convert it, recognise it or compress it. Verso does the work here.
The one qualifier, stated plainly: purchases go through Apple’s App Store, which never sees your documents. Read the privacy policy.
Fair questions.
Verso is a PDF app for the Mac. It reads, marks up, edits, organises, signs and protects your documents, and it does all of it on your own machine. Reading and page organisation are free; the tools that change a document are Premium.
No. There is nowhere for them to go. Verso contains no code that talks to the internet — no account, no sign-in, no sync, no analytics, no crash reporting. You can check it yourself: turn off your Wi-Fi and every feature still works. The only network use is Apple's own App Store, for purchases, and it never sees your documents.
Yes. Click into a line and change the words — the real text on the page, not a box pasted over the top. Verso looks at the lines around the one you are editing and proposes a size that sits between them, so the edited line does not come out visibly larger or smaller than its neighbours. A scanned page is a picture of words rather than words, so run Make Searchable over it first and then you can edit it like any other.
The reading side is free forever and has nothing held back: thumbnails, outline, bookmarks, search, Reading View, the reading ruler, Read Aloud, tabs and continue-where-you-left-off. So is every page operation — reordering, rotating, merging, splitting, cropping, extracting. Markup, text editing, text recognition, export, redaction, forms and signing are Premium, available weekly, monthly, yearly or once as a lifetime purchase.
It removes the content. Drawing a black rectangle over a name in most tools leaves the name sitting in the file, where anyone can select it and copy it straight back out. Verso takes it out, and lets you choose how the redacted page is produced depending on whether you need to keep working on the file afterwards.
Yes, and it can make them searchable. Make Searchable runs text recognition over a scan so its words become selectable, searchable and editable — on your Mac, not on somebody's server. Verso tells you when a document already has real text, so you never run it needlessly.
If you want it to. Verso offers to become the app that opens PDFs the first time you run it, and you can change your mind either way at any point. Nothing else about your Mac is touched.
A Mac running macOS 15.0 or later. The assistant — summarising a document or asking it a question — additionally needs a Mac where Apple Intelligence is available; without one, every other part of the app is unaffected.
